ABOUT THE SOCIAL DILEMMA

The world has long recognized the positive applications of social media, from its role in empowering protesters to speak out against oppression during the Arab Spring uprisings almost a decade ago, to serving an instrumental role in fighting for equity and justice today. And in 2020, during an astonishing global pandemic, social media has become our lifeline to stay in touch with loved ones, as well as proving to be an asset for mobilizing civil rights protests. However, the system that connects us also invisibly controls us. The collective lack of understanding about how these platforms actually operate has led to hidden and often harmful consequences to society—consequences that are becoming more and more evident over time, and consequences that, the subjects in The Social Dilemma suggest, are an existential threat to humanity.

The Social Dilemma is a powerful exploration of the disproportionate impact that a relatively small number of engineers in Silicon Valley have over the way we think, act, and live our lives. The film deftly tackles an underlying cause of our viral conspiracy theories, teenage mental health issues, rampant misinformation and political polarization, and makes these issues visceral, understandable, and urgent. Through a unique combination of documentary investigation and entertaining narrative drama, award-winning filmmakers Jeff Orlowski (Chasing Ice, Chasing Coral) and Larissa Rhodes (Chasing Coral) have once again exposed the invisible in a manner that is both enlightening and harrowing as they disrupt the disrupters by unveiling the hidden machinations behind everyone’s favorite social media and search platforms.

The film features compelling interviews with high-profile tech whistleblowers and innovation leaders including Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology; the co-inventor of the Facebook “Like” button, Justin Rosenstein; Tim Kendall, former President of Pinterest and former Director of Monetization at Facebook; Cathy O’Neil, author of Weapons of Math Destruction; Rashida Richardson, Director of Policy at the AI Now Institute, and many others. Demonstrating how social media affects consumers on a personal level, these fascinating insider insights are seamlessly woven into a captivating narrative, including Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), that illuminates the very real consequences these seemingly innocent technologies can have on our everyday lives.

  1. The video “Is Social Media Good or Bad?” presents expert opinion to explain how social media can affect our mental health. A psychologist in the video says that constantly comparing ourselves to others online can lead to feelings of anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression.

  2. Social media is now a regular part of modern life. Many people use it every day to communicate, share ideas, or stay entertained. But while social media can be helpful, it can also cause problems. To understand its true impact, we can look at two types of textual evidence: statistics and examples.

One type of textual evidence used in the video “Is Social Media Good or Bad?” is statistics. The video shares that more than 3.6 billion people around the world use social media. This number shows how powerful and widespread social media has become. Since billions of people use these platforms, the way they affect our behavior, thinking, and emotions is very important. These statistics prove that the topic of social media is not small—it affects nearly half the world’s population.

  3. Social media is one of the most powerful tools of modern communication. It allows people to stay connected, share ideas, and express themselves. However, there is an ongoing debate about whether social media is good or bad for society. By using two types of textual evidence—statistics and expert opinion—we can better understand its real impact.

One strong piece of evidence is statistics. According to the video “Is Social Media Good or Bad?” by BBC Learning English, over 3.6 billion people are using social media today, and this number continues to grow. This statistic shows how deeply social media is embedded in our daily lives. It highlights the importance of understanding how such a powerful tool affects our behavior, relationships, and well-being.

  4. The ridiculous irony of this film is that the viewpoint of the people in it are trying to manipulate and control the minds and behavior of the viewers, which is exactly what they are warning about. Close to the end one guy sums it up really well when he says "We're seeing corporations using powerful artificial intelligence to outsmart us and figure out how to pull our attention toward the things they want us to look at, rather than THE THINGS THAT ARE MOST CONSISTENT WITH OUR GOALS, OUR VALUES AND OUR LIVES." The people on this film, while they make very valid points about the dangers of social media, they insert THEIR very unilateral and biased beliefs about topics such as climate change and "misinformation," and urge for more regulation to create a "better" society. They warn against propaganda while propagandizing the benefits of controlling the information on social media. The fact that they do not realize the magnitude of their contradictions is mind blowing…. or is it by design? Do they, knowing how the technology they have created manipulates the "users," purposely use this film to manipulate the thoughts and behaviors of the unsuspecting viewers? Promoting more regulation, they are promoting the control of information MOST CONSISTENT WITH THEIR GOALS, THEIR VALUES, THEIR LIVES. That is Dystopian.

  5. There have always been vested interests in the existing order. People dreamed of a new world, and the kingdom was built on sacrifice, but over time, it eventually started to degenerate. I'm not saying that the system needs to be overhauled, otherwise there will be no generational change with the existing vested interests. And we always point out that the system is the problem, but the people who use it have always been the problem, and everyone is just blindfolded and pretending not to see it.

  6. When one of the founders of social media said he would NOT allow his children to have cell phone social media access, I thought then why would you harm our children 👍🏿👍👍🏻⚖️

  7. Every day after I come back from work I pick up my phone and scroll on my fade, wasting time, getting even more sadness.
I knew it, the problem is the Social Media since the beginning.
    Please Stop that, Help us.

  8. I have used Instagram and snapchat for 4 months but after watching this. it's been 3 years, and I haven't used this platform. At this age I think sometimes why people focus on others life instead of their own life. How can they make virtual friends when they don't know each other. because in front of social media everybody tries to show their good side not reality.

  9. All anyone has to do is talk to themselves. Who the fk talks to themselves. Who gets realistic. Who knocks themselves out with that shite. Who says gee this is a really fkn pathetic system where some useless twit comes up with an idea everyone uses and he lives larger and then you all complain the rich get richer but you never discipline yourselves you never ditch your computer you never ditch your apps you never seek your own quality time to do for yourself and have something to show yourself for it. That was ingrained in you you know.

  10. Look what happened in Romania. With the crazy candidate Georgescu. The Supreme Court had to cancel the elections because of the morons that received messages on tiktok and they voted a crazy man as President!

  11. I don't know why people are blaming Netflix.
It's literally a movie/series watching app not an actual social media site. Though I know it have some negative effects as well. Still It's trying to report us or want us to be cautious enough to know about the pros and cons of social media. It's a good initiative. Also YouTube is not necessarily a social media. It's a video sharing app. Yes we can interact with people through comment still It's so different than social media. I'm less addicted to Youtube than social media.
I use YouTube for learning new things, gain knowledge or something just for entertainment like watching Travelling or food videos. Overall Youtube Isn't damaging my mind or attention span the way social media did. I'm not glued with my phone after deactivating social media, If I want to see something particular I have to search for it on YouTube but they only recommend me videos from channels I'm subscribed to. So It's not that bad like social media (Facebook, Instagram, I never had Tiktok or Twitter but these apps are also draining as hell) at all. I do save so much time by deactivating social media. YouTube isn’t really a big problem when you practice self control and learn how to stay away from phone. Youtube works fine for me atleast. Social Media is mainly responsible for rooting our brain.

  12. This is why Elon brought Twitter. He brought it to manipulate, spread misinformation then to hide behind the first amendment.

  13. So if this documentary PROVES that through tech industry needs government oversight, but the government oversight we got, is Harris strong arming FB to only show select stuff, we are doomed if we have oversight or we don't. This should scare anyone with a brain. If America crashes and burns, what would that do to the world market? We have an obligation as Americans to check ourselves and speak up when we see wrong.

  14. So – other than Netflix (who is an ENORMOUS part of the problem) releasing a documentary on it, and YouTube (which is also part of the problem… but potentially a little less so) hosting the official trailer for it…
What is anyone doing about the actual problem?

Like – alright, we’re now aware of it. But what are we going to do to untangle these knots?
