The sneaker industry has tripled in the last ten years, now accounting for almost half of global footwear sales. They are a fashion phenomenon.

Lynnie, 26, owns 80 pairs and still wants more. She travels to New York, the birthplace of the sneaker scene, and charts its rise from the footwear of basketball players, breakdancers and rappers to the defining fashion item of our age and an asset class unto itself, with its own stock exchange (StockX) and collectors parting with up to $500k for a single pair.

How did it happen? And how can the planet possibly keep up? Every pair of sneakers produced emits the same amount of carbon dioxide as a ten mile drive – and the industry is pumping out over a billion pairs a year. She wants to know why she – and we – can’t stop buying them.

  1. Geat video, some fantastic points made ie "biting" I remember being young in that era and everything was about being original, standing out. I'm not sure if that even exists today, it seems like so much is streamlined, everyone wants to fit in and co-exist without being original? are we scared to stand out in this day and age? IDK, just thinking out Loud, but also The young man in Leeds who has the business restoring trainers, that is a brilliant idea. Any links to his company website or name anything??

  2. Dumb! Why does it matter what type of shoes do you wear as long as they fit well.
I replace them when they are torn and at the rate I'm going it'll take three life times to buy 80 of them!

  3. We all doomed Materialism on steroids mps in Parliament raping kids others more worried about trainers Collection and looking like the opposite sex they really did a number on us and our kids

  4. I’m a hypebeast wouldn’t say sneaker head and I’ll tell you getting shoes on retail that are really hyped up and reselling is a good business

  5. I can understand if you like shoes but as an investment? Anybody who has kept a pair long enough will know shoes will disintegrate after 3-4 years even without use. Glues will dry up, synthetic uppers will peel, materials will discolour etc. Sports shoes are the dumbest investment ever!

  6. Omg what kind of a toxic market place is America ? All this for a pair of shoes? This is what happens when you let Capitalism off the leash.
Imagine the pressure on people who cant afford them and have to follow "the trend" because they wouldn't "look cool"

  7. Time we went back to wearing all leather footwear, no man made materials needed and they will decompose over time in a landfill or anaerobic digester. Any metal will return to its oxidised or ore state, can be removed first for recycling if required. Never owned or worn a pair of trainers.

  8. Investing and re selling are two different thing's. This didnt really explain the investment. I know that a pair of Classic reebok are worth more now than when you first got them. Good investment relys on a product going up in price threw time, and investing in the right product in the first place. As for keeping a pair for a long time i still have a pair of Reebok classics, and there abit tatty, but still reebok classic. Ive cleaned them a few times threw the 3 years ive had them. But now the inner materials are going so its a shame but they havent got long, and be a shame to just throw them, the treads are still there so its only the upper that would need fixing. But i doubt you could fix the inner materials.

  9. this is for those people who was never bought decent shoes by their parents, now they walk around town wearing "trainers" which they dont train with that also looks like only a 5yrs old kid would appreciate

  10. Bobbito on the BBC channel- never thought I'd see that. Also, as a native New Yorker, being unique used to be very important when it came to sneakers. As kids, it was a major violation to wear the same shoes as your friends. Sneakerheads are more uniform nowadays and follow trends much to their own detriment.
