  1. I was 13. My family and I started in the hallway and quickly went to the bathroom when our roof started getting ripped off. We rode the rest of it out in the bathroom, which was the only room left standing. I'll never forget that day.

  2. The part about looking up and seeing blue sky is inaccurate though. Tornadoes are not like hurricanes. The funnel is about 10% that we see coming down from the cloud base of the supercell. The supercell is anvil shaped because as the storm and updraft strengthen it pushes up against a layer of cold air in the atmosphere called the inversion. Eventually the updraft bursts through that inversion and explodes upwards and strong upper level winds spread it out like the top of an anvil. There is no hole that opens at the top of the storm. So depictions of being able to look up into the funnel and see sky (like in the movie Twister and Into the Storm) are not realistic.

  3. In the eye of a Tornado!? Never heard of such a thing..Hurricane yea but Tornado? Not saying it’s impossible just unlikely due to the incredibly destructive winds you would first need to endure.

  4. I grew up in Indiana. Everyone to this day, my family and even my husband thinks I'm nuts for heeding the warning from the tornado sirens the second they go and seeking shelter when they sound. I believe one fateful day my overprotective instincts will save my family's lives.

  5. The bigger story is the fact that we haven’t had an F5/EF5 tornado since 2013 when usually we have one per year or every other year. Something’s up with that…

  6. How will humanity survive on other planets? We struggle in these kind of weather patterns imagine on mars or the rest of the planets out there what the weather systems would be like? Elon should focus on more realistic things

  7. I was actually working on a cell site 3 miles outside of Joplin when it hit we didnt even know it happened we were inside the site. After work we headed into town and it was crazy I dont even have the words a police officer saw we had Arkansas plates and told us they were declaring marshal law and to leave town so we headed to motel grabbed our stuff and got out.

  8. I was on my way to work and it was a beautiful afternoon. I shut the radio off and put in a CD because every station was talking about an incoming storm and a possibility of a tornado. I was at work for maybe 15 minutes when we had to head for the basement. We were joking and laughing. Even when the power went out, we were still making jokes. Then there was an incredibly loud sound that went on for minutes, like something was trying to claw its way inside. Then it was gone and it was silent. Outside it was raining so hard that water started coming in under the door and then along the door frame. It was like we were being submerged, I've never seen anything like it. We were lucky because we were on the very edge and the building had damage to the upper floors, the windows were blown out, but otherwise okay. When we went outside, we could see smoke rising from a few places, but couldn't tell where it was coming from. One of my coworkers had an police scanner app on his phone and we could hear the police and fire department on it – they were overwhelmed and there were times we could hear people crying and screaming in the background. The casual attitude about tornadoes changed for us that day.

  9. Wow I had a delivery in Joplin an I shut down early for some reason an the next day it hit was crazy remember flying j was pretty damaged

  10. This event was genuinely frightening. I remember I was riding my bike with my friends. I was always told to not go far from the house, but I did anyway. We were in my friends yard when the sky got dark. We thought it was just going to be rain so we went inside my friends house to chill out. Then my friends mom told us a tornado touched down somewhere so I was riding home when I saw the tornado. It was huge, something I would only see in a dream or a nightmare. Then, when I was almost home, a tree limb that was pre-damaged fell on me and I remember I was there for hours until people saw me and helped free my body. It's still traumatizing every time I here the sirens go off. Rest In Peace to the victims who lost there lives, I got lucky.

  11. Have you Never heard of this?
Its ok. 2011 was an extremely intense year. Especially April and May.

2011, the super tornado outbreak and the year the tsunami hit Japan and had the nuclear plant incident. Just a month prior. So there was a lot going on in the news. Between the other tornados in April and the tsunami, then this freak of nature. They still don't tell the whole truth about the Joplin Tornado. The anemometer broke at St John's Hospital at over 330 mph. It moved the entire Hospital off its foundation! A man was sucked out the hospital window and found almost a mile away. There were more than 500 body parts found. Refrigerated tractor trailers were brought in as temp storage for parts and bodies. There were many FEMA agents that lived in the path of this storm the year before. I think many more were killed than what they reported. Something is off with this one.
Debri from Joplin reached the city limits of Rolla, Missouri. (180 miles East of Joplin) Debri rained on Springfield, Missouri from Joplin.
There were talks of changing the fujita scale for this one. Rumors of calling it an F6 or F7.
The sights, the screams, the smells, will never be forgotten. Death lingered in the air for months.
The Joplin high school graduation took place at the college across town that day.
EMS were warned about potential threat of a large outbreak of tornados for that day. But i dont know if the public knew of then potential outbreak. It was a beautiful sunny day. Blue skies. A little muggy, i had been laying sod all day. And just finished a little after 5pm. We were going to run up to Pizza Inn on Main st, for our favorite pizza, but we were pretty filthy from our task. So we headed back to the house to change. When i parked the truck, the tornado sirens started going off…

    Im done talking about it.

The ABC show Extreme makeover, home edition, built those 7 houses in 7 days, a block from where I lived in Joplin during the tornado.
I lost a cousin to this tornado.
    RIP to all those lost.

  12. Me, my brother, sister, mom, grandpa & grandma got stuck between the walls of the porch trying to get to our basement. My dad got trapped in our minivan. Rode the storm outside and prayed for a peaceful death with my family. But we all made it out with just some cuts and bruises. It was a tragic day, lots of lives lost. But don’t forget about all the miracles too ❤️ joplin strong forever

  13. So many friends and families lost…
My wife and I still have nightmares and fear of storms because of it… The hospital we were born in was ripped to shreds…. The town literally looked like the sky had split it down the middle…. It was horrible… House was shaking, things outside were breaking and snapping… It was terrifying…

  14. Just watch any storm chaser's youtube videos of firsthand experiences with tornadoes for seeing a real experience. Extra dramatic music and added visual effects not necessary.

  15. I was in my boss’s office that day when he got a call that his nephew was missing in Joplin after the tornado hit. Next day it was confirmed: The young man never made it home. Horrific.

  16. I’m from California and I remember watching the tornado build in my backward . Crazy.
Nah jk but in all seriousness stay strong my peeps . What u guys go threw on the other side of the world is absolutely crazy

  17. I’ve never been afraid of tornadoes or most storms (I live in the northeast so our storms tend to be pretty mild overall) but this ad gave me chills, this tornado must have formed really fast and was really based on the sounds of it

  18. While i understand that the people who lived through this storm likely suffer from PTSD of sorts, documentaries are important. Preserving these stories is important. There are documentaries about pretty much ever devastating event in history, and this one should be no different. Teaching about events like these can inspire people to want to learn more about how to prevent this from ever happening again. Even if that's when we're all gone. Just seeing this documentary could inspire that to happen.

  19. It started as such a special Graduation Sunday morning… then everything went really wrong. My family and I survived and I grew up in those days after. I saw things a 17 year old should never have to see. Idk if I'm going to be able to watch this… experiencing it in life was enough.

  20. WHY U PEOPLE ARE VISITING OUR COUNTRIES.. COMING AS A BEGGAR GOING AS A RICHER EMPLOYED AS A TEACHER TO DESTROY OUR FUTURE RUINING THE NATURE TO GIVE US TORTURE WHAT KIND OF CREATURE ARE U MAN THAT'S TOTALLY WRONG MAN SUCCESS ON UR OWN MAN CHANGE UR PLAN MAN WE CANNOT UNDERSTAND MAN IT DRIVE US INSANE MAN SOON U MIGHT GET BANNED MAN DON'T DISTURB OUR CLAN MAN…WITHOUT AN AND I MADE AN END THAT'S THE TREND MY FRIEND…..🎓
