  1. Fredericka (Fredi) Washington would have been amazing! Too bad she was born in 1903! She acted in the Imitation of Life, the original version. Look her up, amazing woman. She new she could "pass" but never went there, in her "real" life.

  2. I JUST read this book for my US literature course!!! Feels like being back in high school when the Leo DiCaprio Great Gatsby came out right after we finished the book unit in English. I’m so beyond excited; this looks incredible.

  3. Ok Tessa Thompson is not passing for anything but anyone saying Ruth Negga can’t pass needs to watch this British genealogy video that’s on YouTube where the family is saying they heard there might be some black somewhere in one of their grandparents background and then they pull out a picture of their clearly mixed race grandparents. Not a one of them could tell their grandparents were black. I thought they were joking but they sat there stunned 🤷🏾‍♀️ Also had a white friend from an all white town argue with me that there was no way Lynette McKee was black. My husband also can’t tell when people are mixed race if they’re not dark enough. Black people can tell but there’s a reason for that.

  4. Here's my think piece: The same way people in this comment section are reacting to the idea of these women passing as white they should be reacting to them passing as black. There were and are plenty of people that could pass as white because there are different phenotypes of white people. And depending on where you're from will determine what is passable as white. So let these clearly multiracial women play this role as white passing people in film. I mean you let them pass as black in real life and in real black women spaces, right?

  5. You guys were not born back then so you would not no what a woman who was passing looks like. Look @ the movie Queen we all thought the same thing but the characters clearly saw her as Caucasian.

  6. Interesting idea, HORRIBLE casting. Neither of these actresses "pass". It makes it hard to go along with the plot, I see why it was shot in B&W but it just doesn't work…

  7. They should of got someone like Halsey or the actress from pretty little lies. Ruth n Tessa are amazing actresses but you can tell they are clearly black.

  8. I think the ignorance of certain people in this era would have allowed a lot more people to pass than we would make allowances for today. (MAYBE.) Also, I think “passing” may be a double entendre here: Ruth’s character is passing for white, while I suspect both Ruth and Tessa’s characters are passing for straight.

  9. Just when the beginning started I thought wow a nice change, finally Hollywood doesn't race bait with a movie… Then the trailer kept going. Hard pass. This is why I watch movies from 2010 and before.

  10. disappointing because, no disrespect to Ruth, but they could have chosen an actress who was more 'white passing'. Ruth does not pass for white im sorry. unless thats the reason they have it in black and white to blur the lines i suppose.
If anyone is interested, I recommend watching 'An Imitation of Life' 1939 version. that's based on a similar topic and the actress is actually more convincing as passing for white. (Fredi Washington). the 1959 version isnt bad either.

  11. One thing that bothers me about this film is that if this were in color you can obviously see that The Lady is black. Why not go for actual white passing black actresses? The whole black-and-white format was a conscious choice to make it look stylized and sleek but it’s really to hide the fact that both actresses could never pass for white.

  12. When I look at photos of others who have passed as White from those times, none of them looked White. I think that's a point of the film. There's a documentary called passing on Netflix. None of those passing looked White but they got away with it.
