goated movie
John Leguizamo played the teacher we all wish we had, loved it
I loved this movie!
It was nice to see that they all survived and lived full lives. I was afraid that part of the plot was going to be that Ito got gunned down by the drug dealers. Also great to see him talking about showing others a different way to escape that neighborhood and the problems with the life that forces on its residents.
One thing I liked was the portrayal of lots of women playing competitively. Like all sports (within physical size limitations), women can play as well as men, and should be given the chance. And just like women now do important jobs is computing, science, math, etc without it being considered "weird", so it should be with games like chess, go, othello, etc.
So great to see that. And I say this as a 63 year old man who used to see only the RARE woman play in rated tournaments (often the girlfriend of a top player, apparently traveling with him, playing as a typical club level player), back 40 to 30 years ago when I played in USCF tournaments a lot (both small and big events).
Why are 95%+ of movies/series massively messed up re the chess content? Are the directors and content folks REALLY THAT incompetent?
"Searching for Bobby Fischer" and "Queen's Gambit" had excellent chess content. And those are the only examples I can think of.
First, if it's supposedly a movie focusing on chess for MUCH of the plot, SHOW THE WHOLE BOARD for the chess play where combinations, mates, good chess thinking, etc. are supposedly happening. Otherwise strong players can infer part of what is going on from knowledge (like the first opening between the one teen and his nasty dad near the opening, re the well known knight (or worse queen if the beginner doesn't see the problem) in the Petroff). But otherwise, generally, side of the board / part of the board is really BAD, and showing something like a rook fork is no big deal without CONTEXT of what's going on in the WHOLE position.
These teens were supposedly at the Florida state championship and supposedly won, yet they have multiple examples of mate in 1 which the opponents don't even SEE coming? REALLY? That makes NO sense.
Reminds me an example of the Rutger Hauer scene in blade runner where the super-genius android plays the super-genius Tyrell, ending a postal style game (think for a long time leaving the board set up, so very high quality play). A clever sacrifice allows a mate in 1 (so hard to see 2 move mate problem), which the Android sees after some contemplation — OK, realistic. Tyrell doesn't even see it when it's the mate in 1, and HE was the one playing the slow game against the aging guy who the Androids were staying with (I forget the character's name). TOTALLY UNREALISTIC. (I'm just at the point where they won the FL state championship so I don't know what happens later yet).
Also, the teaching felt rushed and shallow, re the chess lessons, as a rule. I realize they have length of scenes, but less lessons and better content with meaningful commentary would have been better, IMO.
It was nice to see the last position with the board zoomed out enough to SEE it and see why it was a clear win (for people who know something about the end game). It would have been MUCH NICER to see all that final scramble after they both had about 2:09, zoomed out like that — would have been much more like watching the best games in "The Queen's Gambit".
I get that the movie's core is about "underserved" youth, school systems, etc, but why not do the chess DECENTLY, if the STORY is about outstanding performance re chess by an underdog HS scholastic chess team? (Like they did in the movie about the submersible contest awhile back)?
Sorry to rant, but as someone who loves the game, I'm just really tired of such frequent incompetence by directors, etc, especially when the movie is supposedly heavily about chess. It wasn't perfect, but in comparison, "Queen's Gambit" was fantastic re the chess. And there are various Youtube videos on that where people could infer and research and actually put together key games portrayed. Not so much from this — not even close, generally.
Too bad they ruined a movie about chess by injecting woke bs every 10 minutes
One of the best chess movies. Where you can legit see the prices being moved. Great story line and drama
How odd to have such a small minded person star in this movie.
