For over fifty years, Judy Blume’s classic and groundbreaking novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. has impacted generations with its timeless coming of age story, insightful humor, and candid exploration of life’s biggest questions. In Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation, 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is uprooted from her life in New York City for the suburbs of New Jersey, going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty with new friends in a new school. She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), who isn’t happy they moved away and likes to remind them every chance she gets. The film also stars Benny Safdie (Licorice Pizza, Good Time) and is written for the screen and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen), based on the book by Judy Blume, and produced by Gracie Films’ Academy Award® winner James L. Brooks (Best Picture, 1983 – Terms of Endearment), alongside Julie Ansell, Richard Sakai, Kelly Fremon Craig, Judy Blume, Amy Lorraine Brooks, Aldric La’auli Porter, and executive produced by Jonathan McCoy.

  1. They told me where to go
    (And I always follow)
They told me what to do
    (I swallowed every drop down)
    They told me bedtime stories
    (of how I’d rise above)
They told me they were true

I sat and thought about her
    On the train ride out
    Until my stomach turned
Like it’s done for years now
I thought about her hips and thighs
With the red in my eyes
    I felt my body burn
    Burn, yeah.

    Aeroplane, aeroplane
    Don’t leave without me
'Cos I'm out here all by myself
And I got no place to sleep
    Aeroplane, aeroplane
    Don’t leave without me
'Cos I'm out here all by myself and I
Ain't got no place to sleep.

And you told me that you loved me
    (I swallowed every drop down)
And you told me how it felt
    Like being gagged and bound
And you told me you were leaving
    On the last train out
And you told me, “Go to hell.”

Well, let me tell you, beautiful
    I’ve been there
Believe me when I say I’m not afraid
Of destruction, sorrow, fear or regret.
I've heard the devil call me by my name.
I've heard the devil call me by my name.

    Aeroplane, aeroplane
    Don’t leave without me
‘Cos I'm out here all by myself
And I got no place to sleep
    Aeroplane, aeroplane
    Don’t leave without me
‘Cos I'm out here all by mself and I
Ain't got no place to sleep.

    Aeroplane, aeroplane
    Don’t leave without me
‘Cos I'm out here all by myself
And I got no place to sleep.

    Aeroplane, aeroplane
    Don’t leave without me
    ‘Cos I'm out here
    All by myself tonight
And I got no place to sleep.
Yeah, I'm out here all by myself tonight
    Got no place to sleep
    No, no, no, no –
    Got no place to sleep
    No, no, no, no.

Believe me when I say I'm not afraid
I've heard the devil call me by my name.

  2. This movie took me by surprise a couple times when it appeared on my TV (yes, some of us still have cable). Refreshingly, it is not the same old predictable coming of age drama, well some of it is. It doesn't fall for the easy obvious joke opportunities and the only one-liner that got me was "we must we must we must increase our bust" (or something like that). It will appeal to 12-14 year old girls, but definitely not just a teen girly flick, as it contains relatable moments and messages (not the preachy kind) for adults, parents, grandparents, well, just about anyone except Hulk Hogan MAGA redneck types e.g. I seriously doubt tR*mp would have any idea how these girls felt. Anyway back to the movie, it is so nice to watch an actual real movie about actual real people in the actual real world, when the movie industry is otherwise drowning in a sea of Disneyfied remakes loaded to the hilt with preachy morally-militant woke uber-messaging and race/gender social-political slanting, and all the CGI Marvel crap and conveyor belt rubber stamp animated chunder. So thank you for making a real movie again, it gives me some hope, and FWIW I'm a 60-year old straight white male who still remembers being 12-14 from the guys perspective. It was sometimes awkward for us too, even if we tried to hide it.

  3. Haha I used to watch these movies to get a gist of what to expect when I'm older. But I'm past the coming of age stories since now I'm of age lol (20 years old) so now I just watch these kind of movies for fun

  4. I remember seeing when she was 5 or 10 years old when she did the Ant Man movies with Paul Rudd and now doing a non MCU movie with Rachael McAdams and Kathy Bates. But I still remember her as little Cassie but her Dad Scott Lang always called her Peanut and Scott as the Worlds Greatest Grandma

  5. I must say, I really liked the film Are You There God? It's Me Margaret? just as much as I liked the book it was based on. And I do think that Abby Ryder Fortson will be a highly successful actor, thanks to her soulful performance of Margaret.
