Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” | Official Clip | 20th Century Studios

Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno – one of only three artists to be honored with Academy®, Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Tony® and Peabody Awards – also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.

Bringing together the best of both Broadway and Hollywood, the film’s creative team includes Kushner, who also serves as an executive producer; Tony Award® winner Justin Peck, who choreographed the musical numbers in the film; renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor and GRAMMY Award® winner Gustavo Dudamel, who helmed the recording of the iconic score; Academy Award®-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (“Anastasia”), who arranged the score; Tony Award®-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), who supervised the cast on vocals; and Grammy®-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Chicago”), who served as executive music producer for the film. The film is produced by Spielberg, Academy Award®-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger and Tony Award®-winning producer Kevin McCollum. “West Side Story” has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

From 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company will release “West Side Story” in U.S. theaters on December 10, 2021.

  1. My score when I only watched this clip before I had yet to watch the film was 8/10.
And my score when I watched the clip again after watching the film was 100/10.

  2. Why didn't anybody have the courage to just say "No" to the mighty Spielberg?…..How can anybody remake one of the greatest films of all time?…….This failure won't tarnish his career but it just goes to show you that even one of the most successful directors of all time can't produce movies that everybody wants to see.👎

  3. LX years ago today, a rumble happened in Los Angeles.

Walter Mirisch enlisted Jerome Robbins, who had directed and choreographed the stage version. Because Robbins had no prior film experience and refused to work on the picture unless he could direct it, Mirisch hired Robert Wise to co-direct and produce because of his "experience in gritty subject matter" and his ability to complete pictures under budget and ahead of schedule. Robbins was to direct the musical sequences, while Wise would handle the story's dramatic elements. Robbins developed a habit of shooting numerous takes of each scene, to the point where the film went over budget and behind schedule. This led to his firing. George Chakiris was the only one out of the main characters to not be dubbed. This was because he had no hard solo songs to sing. Wise's original choice for a role was Elvis Presley. However, Presley's manager, 'Colonel' Tom Parker refused, since Elvis would only sing in VI of the XII songs, and because he would not have exclusive rights to the soundtrack. Beymer later revealed that he and Natalie Wood did not have a close rapport off camera, describing her treatment of him as aloof at best. Beymer believed part of the problem was a screen test from a previous film that went south. However, Beymer says that a few years later he and Natalie Wood crossed paths at a night club, she said hello to him and chatted with him for a few minutes, and he was left surprised at how sweet and kind she was to him. Natalie Wood felt very insecure about her singing and dancing, and withdrew into herself, hence why some of her co-stars felt she was aloof.Natalie Wood actually could sing, but her singing voice was not considered strong enough for the songs. Most of the original Broadway cast were rejected for the film as either photographing too old or actually being too old for the teenaged characters. Since Hollywood was accustomed to dubbing the singing voices of many stars, dozens of non-singing actors and actresses were tested or considered for the leading roles. There is some violence, minimal bloud, and mild profanity.

West Side Story (1961) is Not Rated.

  7. I have made some observations here based on this clip but when it comes to the overall quality of the music I think this is going to be great and on a positive note it begins to steer in the right direction compared to other recent-ish film musicals. E.g. Depp and Bonham-Carter in Sweeney Todd – now the singing on that was unforgivable (though Johanna, Anthony and Tobias shone). I am really looking forward to this one. The studios are testing the water on box office film musicals again given their current popularity with the young. Sure, some of the new musicals are musically and narratively flippant to say the least but some, 'Falsettos' for instance, are the product of people who have listened to the masters and really know their stuff whilst also being truly innovative. May be interesting times ahead – hope so.

  8. I’m so glad Ansel is showing his musical ability! I’m surprised so many people didn’t know how great of a singer he is but then again I guess he never had a role to showcase it! He went to the best performing arts high school in nyc and he was brilliant when he performed in our school musicals. Absolutely stunning voice and always got standing ovations. I was just a freshman when he was a junior or senior when I first saw him perform. I’m glad I can hear him sing again!
